200 Hour Teacher Training 9 Month Program (One weekend a month)
Starts October 2010 - May 2011
Our 200 Hour Teacher Training is held on beautiful Hilton Head Island, SC. Offering 12 miles of pristine beaches, lush landscape and an appreciation for the environment this offers the perfect setting for a learning and relaxing yoga retreat!
This program is not only for students who wish to teach yoga but for dedicated students who would like to deepen their practice and further their understanding of yoga. This training program will enhance the integration between body, life and mind and develop the practice of maintaining balance and flexibility in the midst of challenge. Through the in-depth study of asana, pranayama, meditation, sutras and chanting, students are empowered to discover their greatest potential and teach yoga from a place of creative inner power and insight.
Overview
Asana
We will review the 8 limbs of yoga with great emphasis on the third limb of yoga, the Asana. The asana has an empowering effect on the body mind connection; therefore, each session includes an extended asana practice that explores the anatomical study with emphasis on form and alignment. The asana training will cover vinyasa sequencing, and include sun salutations, standing poses, balancing, backbends, seated forward folds, inversions and twists. Students will learn the benefits of the asana as well as the props necessary to accommodate injuries commonly encountered in yoga classes as well as in Yin and Restorative yoga classes.
Anatomy and Physiology
We will study several systems in the body including musculoskeletal, nervous, endocrine, cardiovascular and digestive. Particular attention will be spent investigating kinesiology (where all our movement patterns are expressed), respiration (because breathing is of great importance in yoga) and pathology (so that students become familiar with injuries and special health conditions). We will also explore the subtle, energetic anatomy of chakras, nadis and koshas.
We will look at alignment to learn how to enhance the flow of prana while practicing each asana safely. Teachers in training will learn a hands on approach to assisting and adjusting and will know how to confidently approach students to safely guide them in a direction that offers a deeper experience of the asana insight.
We will study the classical texts of the yoga tradition including Patanjali's Yoga Sutras. We will learn how this wisdom has universal value and how it will inspire us to live in a more healthy and harmonious way. We apply the teachings of loving kindness to the practice of meditation and yoga. We undertake an initial study of the Sanskrit language. Students will learn to pronounce the asana names correctly and to be familiar with the powerful resonance and sounding of the Sanskrit language. The practice of chanting is weaved into the program and we investigate the meaning of the chant, the pronunciation and rhythm of each chant.
This program is registered with Yoga Alliance and follows the newly established guidelines recently mandated for a 200 hour teacher certification program.
