Ask A Yogi - A Yoga Blog

Question: I am interested in learning more about the history and philosophy of yoga. What would you recommend?
Answer: This is great news and perfect timing to be interested in what lies beyond the physical practice! The practice of postures is only a starting point. The feeling we get as a result of our physical practice opens the possibility of positive change in all aspect of our lives. The ancient yogis knew this and they developed concise, practical guidelines and suggestions for applying Yoga in our daily life and into our daily relationships.
Sign up for our upcoming workshop, Beyond the Mat, Living the Yoga Sutras on February 18th and 19th.
Our focus on this workshop primarily is the Yamas and the Niyamas suggested in "The Yoga Sutras" of Patanjali, a well-regarded ancient text outlining yoga in its broader context. The Yamas are presented as five suggestions for mindfully interacting with others and the world around us. The Niyamas refer to the attitude we adopt toward ourselves as we create a code for living powerfully and meaningfully. What do we do though, when we are not acting, speaking and thinking according to these suggestions? This becomes a valuable part of our conversation.
This format is fun, interactive, reflective and perfect for:
*Those who want to go deep into the questions and exploration of living through the eyes of yogic philosophy.
* Yoga teachers seeking ways to effectively translate this wisdom into yoga class.
